The Anger Monster Turns Good

Little fox Felix had a problem. Whenever things didn't go his way, a tiny monster inside him would grow bigger and bigger. His face would get hot, his paws would clench, and before he knew it, he'd be stomping, yelling, or throwing his toys.
"That's my anger monster," Mom explained one day after Felix had a big tantrum when his block tower fell down. "Everyone has one, but we can learn to tame it."
Felix wasn't sure. His anger monster felt so powerful.
That night, as Felix was drifting off to sleep, he heard a grumpy sound from his closet. He peeked inside and gasped. There, sitting on his shoe rack, was a small, red, fuzzy creature with pointy ears!
"W-who are you?" Felix whispered.
"I'm Rumble, your anger monster," the creature grumbled. "And I'm tired of being blamed for everything!"
Felix was surprised. "But you make me yell and stomp and throw things!"
Rumble shook his head. "I don't make you do anything. I'm just your feeling. What you do with me is up to you."
Felix sat on the floor next to Rumble. "I don't understand."
"Let me show you," Rumble said. He hopped off the shoe rack and pulled out a magic mirror from behind Felix's winter boots. "Look at what happened today."
In the mirror, Felix saw himself building the block tower. When it fell, he saw Rumble appear as a tiny red spark inside his chest.
"That's when you felt disappointed," Rumble explained. "But watch what happens next."
Felix watched as the spark grew bigger and bigger until it looked like flames inside him. Then he saw himself kicking the blocks and screaming.
"You let me grow too big," Rumble said. "But it doesn't have to be that way. Want to see?"
Felix nodded.
Rumble waved his paw, and the mirror showed a different scene. Again, the tower fell, and the tiny red spark appeared. But this time, mirror-Felix took a deep breath. The spark stayed small.
"When you breathe deeply, I can't grow as big," Rumble explained. "Want to try another way?"
For the next hour, Rumble showed Felix different ways to keep his anger monster small:
1. **The Breathing Dragon**: "Breathe in through your nose for four counts, then breathe out through your mouth like a dragon breathing fire for five counts."
2. **The Feelings Detective**: "Notice where in your body you feel angry. Is your face hot? Are your hands tight? Just noticing helps you stay in control."
3. **The Time-Out Timer**: "When you feel me growing, count to ten or walk away until you feel calmer."
4. **The Word Wizard**: "Use your words to say how you feel: 'I feel angry because...' instead of letting me out through actions."
5. **The Calm Corner**: "Have a special place with things that help you feel better - like stuffed animals, books, or squishy toys."
Felix practiced each method with Rumble. The mirror showed him successfully handling different frustrating situations.
"You're doing great!" Rumble said, looking less spiky than before. In fact, he was starting to look almost fluffy.
"But why are you helping me control you?" Felix asked. "Don't you want to be big and strong?"
Rumble smiled. "The truth is, I don't like making you feel bad afterward. When you learn to manage me, I can actually help you."
"Help me? How?"
"I can warn you when something isn't right. I can give you energy to solve problems. I can help you stand up for yourself - when you use me the right way."
The next day, when Felix's friend took his favorite truck without asking, he felt Rumble start to grow. But instead of pushing or yelling, Felix took a dragon breath and said, "I feel angry because you took my truck without asking. Please give it back or ask next time."
His friend apologized and asked if they could play together. Felix was amazed! Rumble had helped him solve the problem instead of making it worse.
That night, Felix found Rumble on his bookshelf, looking completely different - soft, smaller, and with a friendly smile.
"You did it!" Rumble said proudly. "You're learning to work with me instead of letting me control you."
From then on, Felix and Rumble became a team. Whenever Felix felt the familiar warm feeling rising, he'd remember Rumble's lessons. Sometimes he still got too angry, but now he knew what to do to calm down again.
And the best part? Felix discovered that when he tamed his anger monster, he actually felt stronger and braver than ever before.
