Ethan was afraid of the dark. When October arrived and the neighborhood began filling with spooky decorations, he became even more nervous about nighttime. The skeletons, ghosts, and especially the glowing jack-o'-lanterns with their eerie faces made him want to hide under his blankets.
"Halloween is next week," his dad reminded him at breakfast. "We should pick out a pumpkin for our porch."
Ethan shook his head quickly. "I don't want a scary pumpkin. They look mean."
"They don't have to be scary," his older sister Maya said. "You can make them friendly or funny. It's all about what face you carve."
Ethan wasn't convinced. That night, as he tried to fall asleep with his night light glowing, he heard a strange tapping at his window. Cautiously, he peeked through the curtains.
There, floating outside, was the strangest sight he'd ever seen β a small, glowing pumpkin with a friendly smile and bright, twinkling eyes.
"Hello!" the pumpkin said in a warm, cheerful voice. "I'm Glow, the Pumpkin Guide. May I come in?"
Ethan was too surprised to be scared. He nodded and opened the window.
Glow floated into the room, casting a soft, golden light that was somehow comforting rather than frightening.
"I understand you're afraid of jack-o'-lanterns," Glow said, settling on Ethan's desk.
"They look scary," Ethan admitted. "Like they want to gobble me up."
Glow chuckled. "Oh, we're not meant to be scary at all β at least, not originally. Would you like to know the real story behind jack-o'-lanterns and Halloween?"
Ethan nodded, curious despite his fears.
"It's quite an adventure," Glow began. "Long ago, people believed that on the night we now call Halloween, the barrier between the ordinary world and the spirit world became thin."
"Like ghosts could come through?" Ethan asked nervously.
"Something like that," Glow nodded. "But people weren't trying to scare each other with pumpkins. They were trying to protect their homes!"
Glow began to glow brighter, and suddenly, the light from his pumpkin body expanded into a magical scene showing ancient villagers carving turnips (not pumpkins!) and placing candles inside them.
"The original jack-o'-lanterns were made from turnips in Ireland," Glow explained. "People carved faces and placed them in windows or near doors to ward off any mischievous spirits. The light was meant to be a guardian, not a monster."
The scene changed to show ships crossing the ocean.
"When people came to America, they found pumpkins were much easier to carve than turnips β and the tradition of the protective pumpkin lantern began!"
Ethan watched, fascinated, as Glow showed him how Halloween traditions had changed over centuries.
"But why the costumes and trick-or-treating?" Ethan asked.
"Ah, that's another wonderful story!" Glow's light shifted again, showing children in old-fashioned costumes going door to door.
"Costumes began as another way to confuse any wandering spirits β if you looked like someone else, they wouldn't recognize you! And giving treats started as a way to share the autumn harvest and build community spirit."
"So Halloween isn't just about being scary?" Ethan asked.
"Not at all! It's about community, creativity, and even protection. Jack-o'-lanterns were the original night lights β keeping people safe in the darkness!"
Ethan looked at Glow with new eyes. "You're not scary at all."
"Of course not! I'm here to bring light and joy. And you know what? You can make your very own guardian pumpkin that does the same."
Glow floated over to Ethan's desk and tapped his stem on a blank piece of paper. "Let's design your perfect pumpkin β one that makes you feel brave instead of afraid."
Together, they sketched different faces β some smiling, some surprised, some silly. Ethan decided on a friendly grin with round, happy eyes.
"Perfect!" Glow declared. "Tomorrow, you can carve this with your family. And remember, when you place a light inside, you're continuing an ancient tradition of keeping the darkness at bay."
As Glow prepared to leave, he turned back to Ethan. "One more thing β would you like to know a secret about the dark?"
Ethan nodded eagerly.
"Darkness itself isn't something to fear. It's just the absence of light. And the wonderful thing about light is that even the smallest flame can push the darkness away. Your jack-o'-lantern will remind you of that every time it glows."
The next day, Ethan surprised his family by asking to go to the pumpkin patch right away. He carefully selected a round, orange pumpkin and showed his dad the friendly face he wanted to carve.
As they worked together, scooping out seeds and carefully cutting the design, Ethan told his family all about the history of jack-o'-lanterns and Halloween traditions. His parents exchanged puzzled glances, wondering where he had learned all this information.
That evening, when they placed a candle inside the finished pumpkin and set it on their porch, Ethan didn't feel afraid anymore. His jack-o'-lantern glowed with a warm, golden light that seemed to push the darkness away.
And just for a moment, as everyone else went back inside, Ethan thought he saw his pumpkin wink at him.
"Thank you, Glow," he whispered.
From that Halloween onward, Ethan became known for his creative and cheerful pumpkin designs. And though he never told anyone about his nighttime visitor, he always made sure his jack-o'-lanterns had friendly, guardian faces β protectors of light in the autumn darkness.
Halloween Pumpkin Tips: 1. Choose a pumpkin with a flat bottom so it won't roll 2. Draw your design on the pumpkin with a marker before cutting 3. Use a scoop to remove all the seeds (save them for roasting β they're delicious!) 4. Always have an adult help with the cutting 5. Place a battery-operated candle inside instead of a real flame for safety
