The Dancing Turtle
Listen to this magical story narrated by our storyteller.
Read the Story
At the edge of Lillypad Pond lived a turtle named Tammy. Unlike the other turtles who loved to splash and swim, Tammy was very shy. She would watch from behind a rock as the other pond creatures played together.
"Come join us, Tammy!" the frogs would call, but Tammy would just shake her head and duck back into her shell.
You see, Tammy had a secret. When she was alone, she loved to dance! Inside her shell, her little feet would tap to the rhythm of the breeze rustling through the reeds. She'd sway to the melody of birdsong. But she was too shy to let anyone see.
One day, a colorful poster appeared on the old willow tree by the pond. "Annual Lillypad Pond Talent Show!" it announced in bright letters. "All pond creatures welcome!"
The pond was buzzing with excitement. The frogs practiced their croaking chorus. The dragonflies rehearsed their aerial acrobatics. Even the fish were planning a synchronized swimming routine.
"You should join the talent show, Tammy," suggested her neighbor, Wise Old Turtle.
"Oh no, I couldn't," Tammy whispered, retreating slightly into her shell.
"We all have special gifts to share," Wise Old Turtle said gently. "Sometimes finding the courage to share them is how we find our true friends."
That night, as moonlight sparkled on the pond, Tammy practiced her dancing away from watching eyes. She twirled and stepped, jumped and swayed. Dancing made her feel so happy and free! But whenever she imagined performing in front of everyone, her legs would tremble.
The day of the talent show arrived. Tammy sat at the back of the audience, admiring everyone's performances. The frogs' chorus was melodious. The dragonflies' air show was spectacular. Everyone was having such a wonderful time.
Then disaster struck! The final act, a beaver's log-rolling demonstration, ended with a splash that soaked the music-making crickets. Without music, the show couldn't have its grand finale!
As everyone worried about what to do, Tammy felt a strange feeling growing inside her. Before she knew what was happening, she had stepped forward.
"I... I can dance," she said, her voice barely audible. "Maybe I could be the finale?"
The pond grew quiet as Tammy moved to the center stage—a large lillypad. At first, she was frozen with fear, but then the friendly fireflies gathered around, creating a gentle spotlight just for her.
Tammy took a deep breath and began to dance. Slowly at first, then with more confidence. She twirled and hopped, her shell catching the firefly light in beautiful patterns. She had never danced so well!
When she finished, the pond erupted in cheers. "That was amazing, Tammy!" "We never knew you could dance like that!" "You're incredible!"
From that day on, Tammy the Dancing Turtle was no longer the shy turtle who hid behind rocks. She made many new friends who admired her talent and appreciated her gentle nature. She even started teaching dance classes for the young tadpoles!
Tammy learned that sharing your special gifts with others isn't scary after all—sometimes it's the beginning of wonderful new friendships. And every evening at sunset, if you visit Lillypad Pond, you might just see a small turtle dancing joyfully among friends, no longer afraid to show her true self.
